Explain the difference between European plan, Continental plan, American plan and modified American plan offered by hotels

Often, when booking a hotel, you come across terms that may not mean much to you. Especially in Nepal  and other Asian countries, where these terms are not as commonly understood as in the West. One of them is booking hotel rooms with a meal plan. Here we explain the difference between European planContinental planAmerican plan and modified American plan offered by hotels around the world.

With the European plan, only the room rate is included in the price and you will have to pay an additional fee to use the hotel’s dining facilities. Generally, it can be called a “room only” plan.

The continental plan includes daily breakfast and room stay at the hotel. The hotel can arrange your favorite breakfast menu or serve a buffet breakfast in the dining room. Again, whether breakfast is served as room service or in a shared dining room depends on the hotel.

The American plan includes all three meals during your stay, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Generally, this plan costs more, but it’s well worth the money and, of course, even more convenient.

The Modified American Plan is a slightly modified version of the American plan and includes room stays with breakfast and a choice between lunch or dinner. Some hotels may have a fixed policy for lunch or dinner where you can’t switch between the two, but it’s generally convenient and inexpensive for guests who need to be away (for work, etc.) at noon or evening.

So the next time you book an accommodation at the Royal Kings Hotel Kathmandu and come across the acronyms EP, CP, AP and MAP, you won’t have to worry about the different price plans on offer.
